Image stabilization is very good for handheld shooting, zooming is smooth. I have been recording my son’s basketball games so he can review them afterward and the image stabilization is far better than any camcorder I have had before. Clarity of movies is good for the price of the camcorder, heavy zooming does result in grainy images. I haven’t tried taking stills, nor do I have any intention of using the camcorder for that. The recordings are clear and look good on a 55″ HDTV.

Overall, the cameras work well. I bought two and use them for independent film work. Overall no complaints.Just FYI, these are NOT touchscreen and the lens cover operates manually. It doesn’t bother me but it did take me a bit to get used to coming off my past Sony Handycams.

I am using this refurbished Sony HDR-CX405 to capture video images of our school’s softball season. I am very impressed with the smooth zoom and great high quality images. I am using a high-speed 64GB micro XD card, and it has been really plug-n-play for all operations. Because of the camcorder’s small size, I am using a tripod for most of my ‘filming’. The built-in LCD color screen was crisp and clear and adequate in bright daylight conditions. The camera is able to capture zoomed high-speed sports action with only slight observed playback artifacts. I chose the highest resolution AVCHD mode for my shots and the camera zooms and focuses quickly in this mode. Playing back the file on a 60″ LCD TV (not 4k), the videos were spectacular. I can only vouch for daylight (with some clouds/overcast) for image capture, so I don’t have any low-light experience with this camera. Please note that the battery does not last all that long. Using the built-in color LCD screen all the time, with moderate stops & starts and moderate lens zooming, it lasted about 2 hours before I had to replace the battery. Not too bad, but I was hoping for longer life. All in all, the HDR-CX405 is a great inexpensive camera with great features for the money.
