Sharp! Compact, And Great Mottled Bokeh!!So I’ve been looking for a fast 35MM lens, that is reasonably sharp and has that great vintage “Mottled” bokeh, for quite some time!I have quite a few 35MMs that give me smooth creamy bokeh… Voigtlander 35mm1.2, Nikon and Minolta 35mm 1.4, etc. But this lil baby, it turns out that I can use it with my other vintage lenses (Zeiss and some Soviet lenses) that all have that same kind of “swirly-mottled” out-of-focus areas.So this completes the set that I can use for video as spherical or with my Sirui 1.25X Anamorphic adapter. This 35MM gives me my wide (@ 28mm anamorphic ) for landscape, a 50MM gives me my medium-wide (@ 40mm anamorphic) 85mm gives me my medium-close (@ 68mm anamorphic) and 100mm gives me my close ups ( @80mm anamorphic).And outside of that, this is a great inexpensive, manual, walk-around lens for street photography! Nice and compact!!

My expectations that this lens could live up to the reviews were exceeded by the image results, but even more so by the handling. The lens is quite sharp in the center wide open, and the bokeh is pleasing. The aperture and focus rings are ideally positioned for me, and the focus throw is relatively short so manually focusing is quick and easy. I can’t think of a more economical to get an extremely compact 35mm f/1.4 that covers full frame!Caveats: My use has been nighttime street photography, so the potential weaknesses of this kind of simple optical formula either don’t matter or are actually a feature, i.e., vignetting at wider apertures, distortion (easily corrected in situations where it matters, and lack of edge sharpness (this lens is probably not ideal for architecture or real estate photography, for example). I also like simple lens formulas more like vintage lenses for the quirky properties (bokeh, flair, etc.). I would note that I didn’t see any flairing or annoying coma in my night images.

This lens is really small, cheap, and well made, with quite smooth feel to manual focus. This lens is not capable of autofocus nor does it have electronic connection to the camera to automatically control the aperture setting or inform the camera of the focal length and aperture setting. The two photos shown here were taken with the pergear 35mm f/1.4 wide open on my Sony A7RII, and it is difficult to fault either of them. The bokeh are good, flare handling isn’t terrible, and there is plenty of resolution across an APS-C crop, but full-frame performance suffers a bit:* Corners wide open are at least 2 stops darker than ideal* There is some field curvature near frame corners wide open* The extreme corners are mush wide open; they sharpen up around f/8The second shot probably looks a little better than the first because I used Sony’s Lens Compensation app in the A7RII to correct with +14 peripheral shading, +1 blue color, and -3 distortion. In both cases, I manually set the A7RII focal length to 35mm so IBIS (in body image stabilization) can compensate for any shake.Bottom line: it’s not my favorite lens, but it is very useful, tiny, and pleasant to use, so I bring and use it a lot. It is OK for landscapes when stopped down, but really shines when used wide open to show the bokeh in environmental portraits and close-up shots. Although various old 35mm lenses are sharper, they tend to be slower and most produce poorer bokeh. This lens is an unbeatably good new optic for the price…

The lens is very well made. It feels like an old lens they made back in the day. It reminded me of the lens my dad had on his Minolta. (2nd pic) So is the lens sharp? I would say that it is very good but not like my Sony lens. It’s also 1/9 of the cost. You buy a lens like this for the fast 1.4 knowing it’s a completely manual lens. If you have never used a manual lens well it will bring out the creative side of your photography, So take out your prime and turn off the auto, and see how you like it. Anyway, so far this is a fun bright lens when I want to get creative.
