If you’re looking at ND filters, and polarizing filters to purchase, then you obviously have a good idea what they’re used for. So, I’m going to skip the condescending part where I explain to you what they are, and how they’re used. I think what you’re interested in is, do they affect the image negatively, and are they of good quality. As far as affecting the image is concerned, the most notable thing from ND filters and polarizing filters, is how well they can manage to tame the color cast they will apply to the overall image, as well as what spectrum of color cast do they display? Let me explain. I find the ND filters to be very effective, and the coatings to be quite excellent. That also goes for the circular polarizer. When tilted, a method often used to see how well the anti-reflective coatings operate, the surface of the filter does not become opaque, and remains as transparent as is to be expected, with the tint you’re working with. That tells me that the anti-reflective coatings are very good, and this is a good way to judge the quality of the filter. A lesser quality filter will begin to reflect like a mirror, and become opaque at certain angles. With my tests, none of these filters displayed that quality. This is a very good start. Do they apply a color cast? The short answer is yes, but that is most certainly to be expected, even at this mid tier price range. I found the ND filters provided a bit of a magenta color cast to the overall image, while the circular polarizer was more on the side of cyan. Neither of the color casts were extreme, as I can compare the ND filters to some variable ND filters that I have, which are far more aggressive in their color casting. The other nice thing to point out when making a comparison to my variable ND filters, is that these newer filters, both the 8 and 64, do not commit any vignetting issues. This is probably my favorite aspect of dedicated ND filters. While variable ND filters are convenient, the vignetting and color casting, is often unusable. The filters are also very nice and thin, and maintain a low profile on the front element of my lens. All in all, I have to say I was very impressed with the quality of these filters. I have some very expensive filters to compare them to as well, and I would say they’re not really that far behind. As a matter of fact, when considering the price, I would say they are well ahead, in the price to value ratio. So, for photography, and videography, ND filters and polarizers are extremely valuable. I certainly am happy to have this set for my needs, and will absolutely be making good use of them going forward. I don’t say this lightly, because for me camera equipment is a passion, but I am in the camp of saying, I would recommend them, and they are very good value.
